Als Huxley zu sich kommt, weiß er nichts mehr. Nicht mal seinen Namen. »Huxley« ist ihm auf den Unterarm tätowiert. Offenbar befindet er sich an Bord eines fremdgesteuerten Militärschiffs auf der Themse. Und er ist nicht allein. Da gibt es noch fünf weitere Überlebende. Den sechsten findet er tot auf, Selbstmord. Sie alle sind nicht zufällig hier: Zusammen sind sie Polizist, Soldat, Ärztin, Physikerin, Historiker und Polarforscherin. Über ein Satellitentelefon erhalten sie von einer mysteriösen Stimme Anweisungen. Unaufhaltsam steuern sie in ein zerstörtes und ausgestorbenes London hinein. Doch schließlich stellen sich ihnen nicht mehr nur Schiffswracks und Brückenruinen in den Weg. Immer lauter werden die Schreie in der Ferne. Im dichter werdenden Nebel lauert ein Grauen außerhalb ihrer Vorstellungskraft. Mit jeder Seemeile wird deutlicher, dass ihre Reise ins Unbekannte ein schreckliches Geheimnis birgt.
“Ein Fluss so rot und schwarz” – Eigene Meinung:
Diese recht kurze aber actiongeladene Dystopie konnte mich nachhaltig begeistern und mitreißen. Ohne Umschweife wird man direkt in die Story geworfen und das große Rätselraten um das Warum und Weshalb beginnt.
Die militärische Komponente empfand ich sehr gelungen und durchdacht. Auch die Charaktere mit ihren Eigenarten und Fähigkeiten passten gut zueinander. Während man die einen sympathisch findet, hasst man die übrigen auch direkt. Aufgrund der Kürze des Romans ist es Anthony Ryan gut gelungen, den Protagonisten für den Showdown die nötige Tiefe zu verleihen.
Dadurch, dass man genauso ahnungslos wie die handelnden Personen ist, bleibt die Spannung durchweg erhalten und man fliegt nur so durch die Seiten und hofft, dass sich ja keiner erinnert…denn das bedeutet den sicheren Tod.
Auch die gesamte Atmosphäre ist wunderbar düster und selbst mit wenigen Worten der Beschreibung sieht man die Schauorte klar vor Augen…gerade auch für diejenigen, die sich in London ein bisschen auskennen.
Fazit:
Ein gut gelungener und wirklich spannender Kurzroman. Für alle Fans von „The Walking Dead“ und „The last of us“ absolut zu empfehlen, wenn man einfach nicht genug vom Weltuntergang kriegen kann.
